Gordon Stutrud

Our special guest this month is USN Veteran Mr. Gordon Stutrud, Executive Officer of the LCS-102 Museum "ship" at Mare Island. Mr. Stutrud will talk about the LCS-102 and the history of the ship type.

Most of us are aware of the current class of LCS (Litteral Combat Support) ships like the USS Oakland that we helped commission in 2021. The LCS-102 is a class of (Landing Craft Support) small ships used to support amphibious landings in the Pacific During WW2. The LCS-102 not only supported the Marines during the Battle of Okinawa but even served in the Japanese Navy during the 1950s and 60s. After serving in the Thai Navy, it was returned to the United States Navy and became a museum ship. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

USS LCS(L)(3)-102 was laid down 13 January 1945 at Commercial Iron Works in Portland, Oregon. The vessel was launched on 3 February 1945 and commissioned on 17 February.

Gordon Stutrud was born in Brainerd, Minnesota, and raised in Richmond/El Sobrante, California. He joined the Navy in 1959 and served on various WWII ships and submarines.

He also attended special High-Tech Electronics Engineer school run by civilian engineers, mathematicians, physicists, etc., and was hired by Bureau of Weapons for support of the Polaris program.

Post Navy includes: Lawrence Radiation Lab at U.C. Berkeley, and Cederline Corp. Concord, California; SDS Enterprise, Concord, California.

Mr. Stutrud is the founder of SDS Technologies, a consulting business with multiple clients including USN, USAF, NASA, plus other non-government entities. H retired in 2001 and has volunteered on USS LCS-102 since 2010.
