Luncheon - Logistics in the Ancient Maritime Environment

  • San Francisco Italian Athletic Club 1630 Stockton Street San Francisco, CA, 94133 United States (map)

Jonathan P. Roth

Dr. Jonathan Roth
Professor of History
Director, Burdick Military History Project

History Department
San Jose State University

Naval warfare is not something new. It has been around since ancient times. What is different is the "logistics" aspects.

Dr. Roth was born in Redwood City and raised in Sunnyvale, California, where he attended Homestead High School. He joined the New York Army National Guard in 1983 and served, mainly in the 69th Infantry Regiment in Manhattan, for six years. He enlisted as a PFC (as he already was a college grad) and was promoted to Corporal, then attended the Empire State Military Academy, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, his highest rank. Dr. Roth’s entire service was peacetime and involved drilling (and marching in the Saint Patrick's Day parade), but subsequently his regiment was deployed after 9/11 and to Iraq. He moved back to the Bay Area to teach at SJSU in 1994, and has lived in various cities, and now resides in Burlingame.

He is presently on sabbatical, working on a book on the Jewish War of 66-73 CE.
