Our speaker will be our own CAPT Tom Snyder, who will speak on the expansion of Naval hospital capacity in California in response to World War II.
Dr. Snyder began his undergraduate work in history, but graduated from Lafayette College with a B.A. in Chemistry. He received his M.D. from Albany Medical College, and a reserve commission as Lieutenant in the U. S. Navy Reserve Medical Corps. His did his postgraduate training in urological surgery at Rush Medical College, and served 3 years aboard destroyers in the South China Sea and at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. Dr. Snyder then joined the Naval Reserve, and worked at Kaiser Health Care for many years as Chief of Department and Chief of Surgical Staff.
In retirement, he has combined his naval and medical interests to work on a history of the first Navy’s first west coast hospital, on Mare Island. He’s the founding executive director of the Society for the History of Navy Medicine, which sponsors academic panels, offers graduate student travel and research grants, and awards a biennial Harold D Langley Book Prize for Excellence in the History of Maritime Medicine. At Albany Medical College, Tom founded and coordinates the Albany Base Hospital No 33 Society, an alumni military affinity group. At home in Vallejo, he frequently lectures to local groups on the history of maritime and military medicine and writes a blog, Of Ships and Surgeons - Notes on Maritime Medicine, Past and Present. He has published several articles on maritime medical history.
We hope that the questions and concerns about the omicron variant will be resolved in the near future. Meanwhile the health and safety of our companions is our priority. We are working on an outstanding program of speakers for the year and look forward to getting together again in person.
Think of someone you know who revels in naval history . . . and invite them to be your guest. We'd love to have them join us for our monthly Commandery ZOOM Meeting.
** Gather an hour before our Commandery Meeting and chat in the ZOOM application in an unformatted, unmoderated manner. You can join us so we can see your face and engage in light conversation (or just listen, nod, and smile). So, from 11a to 12 noon our Chat room will in Happy Hour mode! **
