A native of San Francisco, California, Douglas M. Moore, Jr. began his naval career as a midshipman in the NROTC unit at the University of California (Berkeley) in 1957. Following commissioning he was assigned as Supply and Disbursing Officer aboard USS PRICHETT (DD-561) which deployed to WESTPAC.
The 22-year old Ensign in the US Navy embarked on a 36-year adventure. His first assignment on the World War II Fletcher Class destroyer, as the Supply and Disbursing Officer (responsible for the Supply Department of the ship with 25 percent of the ship’s 300-person crew), fed and paid the crew and supported spare parts for the ship’s equipment, ship’s store, laundry, barbershop, post office and medical personnel.
The assignment was a two-year saga which took the ship on an eight-month cruise to the South Pacific, a single ship intelligence gathering mission during the Cuban missile crisis, as part of the Pacific Ocean wide recovery force for the first orbital mission circumnavigating the globe by John Glenn and other missions which are still classified.
You can read all about it in his book, “A Look Back to the Supply Corps of Yesteryear”, representing the experience of a young officer preparing him in ways he could never have imagined; to becoming a mature and contributing member of society and eventually attaining the rank of Rear Admiral.
