CDR Jennifer Free, USN, Commanding Officer SD Naval Recruiting District

Commander Jennifer Free is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. Cmdr. Free is a warfare-qualified surface warfare officer. She enlisted in the Navy in 1993 and served 3 years as a hospital corpsman. She graduated from the University of Rochester in 2000 and received her commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. She also attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California where she earned a Master of Science in systems engineering in 2006.

Operational tours include serving as engineering inspector for engineering assessments pacific in San Diego, California; engineer officer onboard USS Simpson (FFG 56) in Mayport, Florida; assistant operations planner for Commander Amphibious Squadron SEVEN in San Diego, California; and onboard USS John S McCain (DDG 56) in Yokosuka, Japan. Cmdr. Free has completed deployments in support of IRAQI FREEDOM, operation ENDURING FREEDOM and counter narcotics operations.

Free has been assigned to staff positions ashore. In 2010, she was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations where she served as a special assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations and to U.S. Special Operations Command where she served as a future operations planner. She was also an associate fellow with the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group XXV, and is a member of the Program for Emerging Leaders in Weapons of Mass Destruction at National Defense University. In December 2016, she assumed the duties and responsibilities as executive officer of Navy Recruiting District San Francisco. Commander Free assumed the duties and responsibilities as commanding officer of Navy Recruiting District San Francisco in March of 2019.

Free’s awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, as well as various campaign and unit awards.
